Pro Gridiron Football Draft GPA: AFC EAST

The Pro Gridiron Football Draft GPA will grade each teams pick and giving it and overall score...Like a report card. I will look at each
player picked, the players available at the pick, the value of the pick, and how the pick will fit with the needs of their team. Highest
possible grade is 4.0
Miami Dolphins May 2, 2008
Round 1: Jake Long, OT Michigan Grade: A
If the Dolphins would have picked any of the top 5 prospects, the probably would have had an "A". Long will give them some
stability on the offensive line and should be a good one for years to come.
Round 2: Phillip Merling, DE Clemson Grade: A
The Dolphins ended up with first round talent in the second round. Merling, even though with the injury issues, will be a good
defensive end in the league and has a chance to be the best defensive end in the draft.
Chad Henne, QB Michigan Grade: C
A lot of Dolphins fans like the pick of Chad Henne, but I thought the pick was a reach could have got him in the 3rd round. Henne
is a very inconsistent quarterback who was helped at Michigan by a nice offensive line, running game, and good wideouts. Not a
fan of the pick.
Round 3: Kendall Langford, DT Hampton Grade: B
I was kind of shocked when the Dolphins pick him. I thought he was going to slide into the 4th round, but the Dolphins may have
a solid starter at the defensive tackle position for years to come. He led Hampton in sacks in his senior year and is a good run
stopper.
Round 4: Shawn Murphy, OT Utah State Grade: B
Could be a sleeper pick for the Dolphins. Murphy is a very good offensive lineman despite only playing two years at the position.
Round 6: Jalen Parmele, RB Toledo Grade: C
Even though Parmele is a big back (6-0, 221) who can get the tough yards. He also did kick return duties in college, though he
probably will not in the NFL. Some experts think he can be converted to fullback.
Donald Thomas, OG Connecticut Grade: C
Definitely a project. Thomas only played 14 games at Connecticut and the Dolphins are hoping his athleticism transfers to the
NFL.
Lex Hillard, RB Montana Grade: C
Hillard suffered a torn ACL in '06. I really did not like the pick because he reminds me of the back that they picked earlier this
round, Jalen Parmele. I did not think they needed another running back here.
Round 7: Lionel Dotson, DE Arizona Grade: C
Another project pick for the Dolphins. A though decision where to place him in the NFL. He was picked as an end, but lacks the
speed. If he bulks up a little, he could play tackle, the position he played in college.
Dolphins GPA: 2.67
Miami made nice moves on their offensive line and added depth at the running back position. Where Miami failed was to add some
playmakers and depth to their struggling secondary, especially at cornerback.
Buffalo Bills April 27, 2008
Round 1: Leodis McKelvin, CB Troy Grade: B
I was a little surpised at the pick. I thought the Bills would draft a Offensive Tackle especially with Ryan Clady, Chris Williams,
and Jeff Otah still available. Not saying McKelvin was a bad pick, but it was something that could have been addressed later in
the draft. But on the positive note, he has good size, speed, and ball skills at the corner position.
Round 2: James Hardy, WR Indiana Grade: B
Hardy was a good pick by the Bills in Round 2. He will give the Bills a possession receiver and a red zone threat that they desperately
need.
Round 3: Chris Ellis, DE Virginia Tech Grade: B
A raw talent at the defensive end position. Ellis has great speed on the edge (4.56 40-yard dash), but a little inconsistent. Could
be a sleeper if he is able to make the adjustment to the pros.
Round 4: Reggie Corner, CB Akron Grade: D
Had a decent pro day, but there were better corners available at the time.
Derek Fine, TE Kansas Grade: C
Not a bad pick and will be a decent backup for the Bills. Does not have great speed and needs to be developed on blocking.
Round 5: Alvin Bowen, OLB Iowa State Grade: A
A linebacker would can play the run and the pass. Great value for the pick and a possible steal. Bowen has the potential to be a
future starter for the Bills.
Round 6: Xavier Omon, RB NW Missouri State Grade: B
A very good college player who provide depth at running back postion for the Bills.
Round 7: Demetrius Bell, OT Northwestern State (LA) Grade: C
An athletic offensive lineman who also played basketball at Northwestern State. Is a raw player, but has good footwork.
Steve Johnson, WR Kentucky Grade: B
Was a good red zone target for Andre Woodson at Kentucky. Good size and speed and will have a good chance of making the
team as a seventh rounder.
Kennard Cox, S Pittsburgh Grade: C
A versatile player safety who could probably play some cornerback in the league.
Bills GPA: 2.60
I would have like to seen the Bills add more depth at the offensive tackle position, but they did add two big receiving targets to help out the
offense and provided some speed on defense. Could have been a better draft for the Bills.
