Adam ain't: Safety gets cut Posted by D.A. Louis May 7, 2008
Suntimes.com Reports: A return to the defense he starred in with the Rams couldn't revive Adam Archuleta's career last season, and not even his relationship with coach Lovie Smith could get him to training camp this summer. The Bears released the veteran safety Tuesday to give him time to land a job elsewhere. Acquired from Washington for a sixth-round pick a year ago, Archuleta never panned out in the cover-2 scheme in which he thrived while playing for Smith in St. Louis. He lost his confidence during a rocky stay with the Redskins and said last season that mental hurdle was his biggest obstacle. It was a precipitous fall for a player whose contract with the Redskins was the richest ever for a safety at the time.

Bears, Tommie Harris agree on new contract Posted D.A. Louis June 20, 2008
Chicago Tribune Reports: They continued to stay true to that philosophy Thursday night when defensive tackle Tommie Harris signed a four-year contract extension worth $40 million that a league source confirmed guarantees him $18 million overall and is worth $27 million the first three years.
The Bears have called a Friday morning news conference to announce a package that will make Harris the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle.

Bears Release Former 1st Rounder Posted by Jay Miles June 9, 2008

Associated Press Reports: The Chicago Bears thought Cedric Benson would be their next great running back. He'll instead go down as one of their biggest disappointments.
The Bears waived Benson on Monday after his second alcohol-related arrest in a month, ending a rocky three-season tenure in which he failed to live up to expectations after starring at Texas.
"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions."
The troubled running back, who didn't participate in organized team activities Monday after telling the Chicago Tribune he would, issued an apology through sports attorney David Cornwell while maintaining his innocence.
"I apologize for making the poor decision to drink and drive during the early morning of Saturday, June 7th," Benson said in a statement. "Given the incident last month, it was a particularly bad decision. I have no excuse for this lack of judgment. Though I strongly believe that I am not guilty of any crime, I realize that the public and the Bears organization hold me to higher standard. Though my local attorneys will continue to work hard to prove my innocence, I confess to using poor judgment. Please accept my deepest apology."

Bears sign rookie safety Steltz Posted by D.A. Louis June 3 ,2008

ChicagoSports.com Reports The Bears drafted Craig Steltz with expectations that the safety would pay dividends sooner than later. If Steltz plays up to that potential, he could make his rookie contract that much richer.
Steltz signed a four-year deal with the Bears Monday that included a $445,907 signing bonus and could be worth close to $3 million with incentives. He has the chance to make as much as $1.2 million or the lowest-level tender for a restricted free-agent

Hester takes aim at starting wide receiver job Posted by D.A. Louis June 2, 2008
Daily Herald Reports: The depth chart at wideout is in flux with newcomers Marty Booker and Brandon Lloyd figuring prominently in the mix, along with Hester, Rashied Davis, Mark Bradley and rookie Earl Bennett, plus holdovers Mike Hass and Brandon Rideau fighting for roster spots.
"Right now the position is wide open," Hester said. "The best two are going to step up and play."
Hester sees himself as a starter; if not now, then soon.
"If you're a receiver and you don't feel that way, then you don't deserve to be out here on the field," he said. "It's competing for a job, and that's how the next man (on the depth chart) gets better. That's what I'm out here doing, and when the season kicks off, I'm hoping I'll be one of the No. 1 guys."

Benson a no-show for Bears workouts Posted by D.A. Louis May 20, 2008
ChicagoSports.com Reports: Although Cedric Benson was not required to appear at a Monday court date related to his May 3 arrest, he was expected to join his Bears teammates for the start of organized team activities. But Benson was missing in action.
According to a teammate, Benson was nowhere in sight as the Bears began the voluntary OTAs. Adrian Peterson got the reps as the first-team running back with Benson gone. It's unclear whether Benson will rejoin the team Tuesday.
Linebacker Brian Urlacher also skipped the session because of his contract dispute with the club.
Coach Lovie Smith recently said Benson is the starter and that it's his job to lose.

Baby mamas bear down on Briggs Posted By D.A. Louis May 15, 2008

SunTimes.com Reports: Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs is close to settling a high-profile paternity claim filed against him, but his baby mama drama may just be starting. In court Wednesday, Briggs' ex-girlfriend Brittini Tribbett, 21, again pleaded for Briggs to provide adequate emotional and financial support for their baby girl, while another pregnant woman stood by, listening to talk of how she's set to deliver a Briggs baby. Briggs, 27, wasn't in court. He is living in Arizona with yet another woman who recently gave birth to another daughter of Briggs, those involved in the case alleged.
