Cincinnati.com Reports: Limited last week at the Bengals' mandatory minicamp because of a tender ankle, wide receiver Chad Johnson will undergo arthroscopic surgery but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp on July 27.
Johnson, who has been unhappy with the Bengals since the end of last season, reported in time for minicamp but did not participate fully in the two practices last Thursday, though he passed a physical that morning.
On Saturday, head coach Marvin Lewis said Johnson's ankle condition needed to be addressed.

Kentucky Post Reports: Disgruntled Bengals receiver Chad Johnson stayed true to his word and showed up to the team's mandatory minicamp Thursday morning. Johnson told ESPN The Magazine recently that he would show up for the camp after stating numerous times this offseason that he wanted to suit up for another team in 2008.
Showing up, ready to go, Ocho Cinco ended the speculation about a possible holdout. The 2001 second round draft pick reported at 8 a.m., but didn't immediately take the field with his teammates.
Once he took the field, the Bengals all-time leader in receiving yards did minor drill work while cameras were allowed on the practice field, mostly walking around and talking with some of his teammates. Johnson signed a contract extension in 2006, creating a deal that worth $35.5 million through 2010 with an option for another year, but said many times since the 2007 season ended that he wanted to be traded.

Bengals.com Reports: After signing a five-year extension Thursday that gives him $13 million over the next three years and $30 million if he hits all the escalators of a deal that ends when he is 30 years old in 2014, 23-year-old Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko thought he had just purchased some leadership.
"I'm excited to be a leader on this team," Peko said after Thursday afternoon's practice. "A lot of young guys come up to me and tell me, 'Man, what year is this for you? Is this like Year Six? Year Five?' And I say, 'No, it's my third year.' They're just looking up to me now. It's time to step up as a leader on this defense. To have my voice out there and to play hard and step up as a leader for this team."
The Bengals moved to lock up one of their emerging young players as Peko's agent said his client has agreed to a deal that not only keeps him in Cincinnati through his ninth NFL season but already makes him one of the top 10 paid defensive tackles in the league.

After sticking with Odell Thurman through a two-year NFL suspension, the Bengals announced this morning that they've waived the the second-year linebacker.
In a statement, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the team has "not seen the right steps taken by (Thurman)."
“With our offseason work in progress and new talent added at our linebacker position, we’ve determined it’ s best to keep moving in a direction that does not include Odell,” Lewis said.
Lewis called Safarrah Lawson, one of Thurman’s Atlanta-based representatives, and told him that the team has cut ties with Thurman, Lawson told The Enquirer this morning.

Cincinnati.com Reports: Amid a relatively innocuous statement coming off the field Tuesday, following the team's first offseason practice, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the team is installing a new defense.
He offered no details, but the confirmation of a new defensive scheme - following the firing of Lewis' second defensive coordinator and the hiring of his third, Mike Zimmer - comes on the heels of Lewis saying the team will stay with a four-lineman base.
"It's a good day, a good start," Lewis said after the 80-minute practice in shorts, practice jerseys and helmets. "Our goal is to come out ... we're installing a new defense. We have an opportunity for some guys who didn't play as much on offense for us to get a good head start."
