The Pro Gridiron Football Draft GPA will grade each teams pick and giving it and overall score...Like a report card. I will look at each
player picked, the players available at the pick, the value of the pick, and how the pick will fit with the needs of their team. Highest
possible grade is 4.0
Dallas Cowboys
Round 1: Felix Jones, RB Arkansas Grade: B
Dallas needed depth at running back, but with Mendenhall still available I thought he would be the pick. Jones provides them with a
"change of pace back" and should fit in nicely with their offensive line and splitting carries with Marion Barber.
Mike Jenkins, CB South Florida Grade: A
With Jenkins falling to them with the 25th pick, the Cowboys get an aggressive corner who can play good man coverage. Great pick.
Round 2: Martellus Bennett, TE Texas A&M Grade: C
Questionable pick. Bennett does not have great speed and will have difficulty transition into the passing game in the pro level. If they want
him to be primarily a blocker then he should be fine, but should you draft a tight end for blocking in the second round?
Round 4: Tashard Choice, RB Georgia Tech Grade: B
With already drafting Jones in the first round, Choice gives them another option if Barber does not resign next year. A power runner with
good speed and hands.
Round 5: Orlando Scandrick, CB Boise State Grade: B
With Scandrick, they get 3rd round talent in the 5th. Draft stock slip dramatically because of off the field issues.
Round 6: Erik Walden, DE Middle Tennessee State Grade: B
At 6-2, 238 he does not have the typical pro size for an defensive end and will probably be converted to linebacker in the Cowboys 3-4
defensive.
Cowboys GPA 3.00
With only having six picks in this year's draft, Dallas did a good job of getting players that can contribute right away in Felix
Jones and Mike Jenkins. What really could have made their draft even better was addressing the receiver position.
New York Giants
Round 1: Kenny Phillps, S Miami Grade: A
Giants get the best safety in the draft. Good speed, ball skills, and understanding of the game. Should see immediate playing time and has
the potential to be better than former safety Gibril Wilson (signed with Raiders).
Round 2: Terrell Thomas, CB USC Grade: C
Does not have the speed to play corner at the pro level, more suited as a safety. Was able to get away with a lot of his inabilities at USC
because of their defense.
Round 3: Mario Manningham, WR Michigan Grade: A
Despite what everyone says about his issues, I think the Giants get the playmaker in the receiving corps that they really need. Being around
a championship team and good veterans is probably the perfect situation for Manningham.
Round 4: Bryan Kehl, LB BYU Grade: B
Has really good speed for the linebacker position. Can play both inside and outside linebacker and is decent in pass coverage.
Round 5: Jonathan Goff, LB Vanderbilt Grade: C
A good tackling linebacker, but struggles in pass coverage and adjusting to plays in a timely manner.
Round 6: Andre Woodson, QB Kentucky Grade: A
See Woodson's Slide
Robert Henderson, DE Southern Miss Grade: A
Could be better against the run, but is great pass rusher and should not have fell this far in the draft. Has a good chance of making the
team and being in the defensive end rotation.
Giants GPA 3.28
The Giants had another solid year in the draft especially Day 2. They covered almost every need besides depth on the offensive
line, but getting 1st round talent in the 3rd with Mario Manningham who can contribute right away and a Week 1 starter in
Kenny Phillips, who I think may have the potential to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
