NFL Network Reports: The Redskins signed free-agent safety Stuart Schweigert on Monday, giving the team an extra option in the defensive backfield as it contemplates moving LaRon Landry from free safety to strong safety.
Schweigert is a free safety, having started 42 games in four seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He lost his starting job late last season and was released by the Raiders last month.
"It feels like a thousand-pound bear's been lifted off my chest. It's time for a fresh start," Schweigert said. "In Oakland, I felt as if my time was up there. It was a deal where I wasn't in their future. I feel like I'm in the Redskins' future."

Redskins Acquire DE James From Vikings Posted by Jay Miles May 27, 2008

Yahoo Sports Reports: The Washington Redskins acquired defensive end Erasmus James on Tuesday for a conditional seventh- round draft pick, a low-risk deal for a former first-round pick whose career is threatened by a pair of serious knee injuries.
The Vikings announced on Friday that they were placing James on waivers after he failed to pass a physical, but the Redskins called before the paperwork was filed. Minnesota will receive a selection in the final round of next year’s draft if James makes Washington’s 53-man roster.
James was the No. 18 overall pick in 2005 and had four sacks as a rookie, but he tore a ligament in his left knee in Week 2 of the 2006 season. He playing sparingly last year before reinjuring his ACL in Week 13.
With the Redskins, James will be reunited with defensive line coach John Palermo, who was an assistant at Wisconsin when James was chosen as the Big Ten defensive player of the year.

LB Washington Ready To Put Injuries Behind Him Posted By Jay Miles May 25, 2008

Redskins.com Reports: In an offseason of change, Marcus Washington is glad that the Redskins' defense has remained mostly intact, both in terms of scheme and personnel. What Washington hopes for in 2008 is an injury-free season.
Each of the last two years, Washington has had nagging injuries that sidelined him for several games.
In 2006, Washington missed the last two games due to a knee injury. Then he underwent hip surgery, forcing him to miss most off-season work.
Last season, Washington struggled with a forearm injury early in the season, then he was slowed by a nagging hamstring injury that sidelined him four games.
Washington, 30, hopes to put the injuries behind him. During the May 2-4 mini-camp and the first week of OTAs, he looked like his old self on the Redskins Park practice fields.
"I just want to continue to get back into the best shape I can," he said. "I'm feeling good. I take it one day at a time and do what I do."

Washington Post Reports: The Washington Redskins will hire Morocco Brown to be the new director of pro personnel, according to league and team sources, completing the reshaping of the front office under vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato.
Brown, a native of Hampton, Va., and a former assistant scout with Washington, replaces Louis Riddick, who was released recently from the organization. Brown has agreed to start work in Washington next month, sources said.
Brown had been assistant director of pro personnel for the Chicago Bears since 2001, earning a reputation as a bright prospect, league sources said, and was someone the franchise did not want to lose.

Redskins release kick returner Mathis Posted by D.A. Louis May 16, 2008

The Washington Times Reports: The Redskins, long heavily dependent on free agents, cut their one veteran pickup of 2008, kickoff returner/receiver Jerome Mathis, yesterday just six weeks after signing him.
Mathis, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie for the Houston Texans in 2005 while averaging a superb 28.6 yards a return, had been limited by injuries to just five games the past two seasons. Since Mathis, a standout at Hampton (Va.), didn't receive a bonus for signing April 4, his release didn't cost the Redskins anything.
Washington's choice of receiver Devin Thomas with its top draft pick last month might have doomed Mathis since Thomas also excelled as a return man at Michigan State. Second day selections J.T. Tryon and Kareem Moore can also return kicks. And when Mathis had to leave the opening practice of minicamp with a pulled hamstring, he all but ensured his departure.

Washington Post Reports: Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell has what the team described as a minor hamstring injury.
"He just felt it grab, it didn't pull all the way," Coach Jim Zorn said yesterday after the last of the team's three organized team activities this week at Redskins Park. "He was feeling his hamstrings all along, and I think it's because I have him" bending his knees more to stay at one level while dropping back

Rookie TE Davis Missing at Camp Posted by Jay Miles May 4, 2008

The Washington Times Reports: Second-round draft pick Fred Davis didn't report for the last day of minicamp. The Redskins eventually located the tight end from USC and said he's safe but didn't release any other information at this point.
"He didn't show up to meeting this morning so we started looking for him," coach Jim Zorn said. "There was one of two scenarios. Either there was som real trouble and we needed to find him or he screwed up. I haven't even got to talk to him yet. I know he has been found. I believe it is more in the 'I screwed up' category. I just want to talk to him and make sure he and I are both on the same page. I don't know if he was sick. I don't know if he was out. I don't know what the deal was. It has to be mortifying to him to know he missed practice.
